James Morgan is hanged on Boston Common.

The execution of the convicted murderer is the first in seven years. People come from as far as 50 miles away to witness it, and the prison where Morgan had been kept is described as a “house of meagre looks and ill smells . . . the suburbs of hell, and the persons much the same as these.”
